The Focus Eye Centre is one of Ottawa’s best cataract surgery clinics. One of its main doctors is Dr. Davin Johnson, who is a refractive and cataract surgeon that also specializes in cornea and external disease.

Dr. Johnson finished Ophthalmology at Queen’s University and is one of the most well-known experts when it comes to cataract surgery. He also offers fellowship training for medical students.

The doctors at Focus are required to have over 20 years of experience in surgery and laser vision correction. If experience is your concern, you don’t have to worry about it here because all of the doctors are screened properly.

Other than experienced doctors, Focus also has state-of-the-art tools to make sure that surgeries are done safely with minimal to no risk. As a result, some of the clinic’s procedures can be expensive.

We also appreciate its focus on patient care and support even after surgery. The patients are given free eye drops that they have to maintain for a week or two, depending on the severity of their condition.

Overall, despite some services being expensive and the fact that the clinic only has one cataract doctor, it’s still one of the best options for cataract surgery. This is because of its technology and post-surgery care.

Pros

  • High-end technology
  • Offers free eye drops post-surgery
  • Doctors are experienced

Cons

  • Some services are pricey
  • Only one cataract doctor

Customer Reviews

Went smoothly
“I had an excellent experience at Focus Eye Centre for a RLE (refractive lens exchange). It is a cataract type surgery and the procedure itself went smoothly and the outcome has been incredible. I was a -9 for distance and used to need reading glasses. Now my vision has been corrected for reading, mid and distance. I went for a premium lens technology called panoptic. The staff are very experienced and caring.” – Karen Chadwick
Excellent operation
“I had an excellent experience at Focus Eye Centre. The whole process went very smoothly, from the initial consultation all the way to the surgery and the post-op visits. The staff is friendly and extremely professional. All my appointments were on time and I never had to wait at all. Free parking during weekends.” – Patrick Yelle

The Ottawa Hospital is considered a very high-end facility. The technology that it has access to is quite impressive but this means that many treatments can be expensive.

One of the best things about the Ottawa Hospital is its optical research facility and among its many studies is eye disease management. It is also one of the leading researchers when it comes to cataracts.

However, because the hospital is also a research facility, some of its equipment is being used for research, hence procedures have a wait time. For cataract surgery, the wait time is around 3 – 4 months.

Luckily, cataract isn’t considered a severe optical problem so many patients opt to wait for their turn.

Potential patients may also have a problem with the fact that the clinic is located in a hospital. Patients who come to the hospital are much more at risk of being infected by other diseases.

The real benefit that the hospital offers is its many doctors. Even if patients have to wait a few months for their surgery, they can still consult with different doctors regarding other ways to keep their eyes healthy.

Overall, the Ottawa Hospital is still a great facility for cataract surgery.

Pros

  • High-end equipment
  • Easy to find location
  • Multiple doctors available

Cons

  • Higher risk of other infections because of hospital location
  • There is a wait time for cataract surgery

Dr. Steven Poleski founded the Ottawa Eye Clinic in 1997. It is one of the oldest optical clinics in the city and also one of the most experienced.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures performed here. Its doctors are already known experts in performing the task, which is why the clinic is on our list.

It is also great that it has multiple eye-related services under its belt. Patients experiencing multiple eye issues won’t have to keep switching clinics because this one already has most of the services they need.

We also like that it has its own diagnostic department that can help patients determine the severity of their cataract issues.

This is also where patients go after surgery to get post-procedure care. This department is dedicated to making sure that there aren’t any hidden issues left in the patient’s eyes.

The Ottawa Eye Clinic also has a disease management department that provides eye drops that help patients who underwent surgery have an easier time after the procedure.

It should be noted that because of the clinic’s numerous clients, scheduling an appointment can take a while. However, we still think the Ottawa Eye Clinic is easily one of the best options for cataract surgery.

Pros

  • Multiple departments
  • Easy access location
  • Bilingual doctors

Cons

  • Appointments can be difficult to schedule
  • Long hold during calls

Customer Reviews

Fantastic
“Had a fantastic experience with the bilingual staff especially, Jasmine. She was great with the kids; very patient and kind. Thank you for the great experience.” – Anthony DiCarlo

Highly recommended

“This is regarding Kevin Chavez & The Ottawa Eye Clinic at 680 Montreal Rd. Kevin, an optometrist there, is quite obviously an expert in his field who possesses tremendous people skills. His attention to detail is noteworthy and greatly reassuring: he is painstakingly thorough. The operation of this clinic is competent, *friendly* and modern, beginning at reception and carrying through to the doctors. I received the absolute best care during my first visit. This is where I will have all future eye exams done, and absolutely where I will have my GP refer me when I require assistance from their ophthalmology department.” – Gary Cannon

Herzig is another great clinic for cataract surgeries. One of the best things about this establishment is its multiple types of procedures.

The clinic offers traditional cataract surgery, refractive cataract surgery, and lens replacement services.

For those who do not know, cataract surgery means removing your eyes’ foggy lenses and replacing them with new ones.

These lenses are temporary and will have to be replaced again if ever they fog up. That is why the clinic offers different lens replacement options.

Some options are faster and require little to no operation, but these are usually more expensive.

The clinic also offers precision surgery and laser-assisted surgery. These basically do the same thing, but some procedures are more expensive than others.

Herzig also offers other optical services such as vision correction and laser procedures. One of the reasons why we put it on our list is its versatility.

It also offers a great post-surgery care department where doctors let patients know how they will avoid getting another cataract and other eye problems.

Herzig is definitely one of the best options for cataract surgery in the city. The clinic’s pricing and scheduling could be better, but despite that, the services it offers are versatile and the post-surgery care here is very good.

Pros

  • Offers multiple cataract procedures
  • Also offers lens replacement
  • Excellent post-surgery care

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Scheduling a procedure can take a while

Customer Reviews

Good experience
“I had my surgery done yesterday and the staff were so nice, calm, and amazing. They went through everything very thoroughly to ensure all aspects of the procedure were clear (pre and post op) and ensured my prescription was accurate and dry eye was sorted before proceeding with anything. I really felt they wanted to check all of the boxes and not just rush me into anything. During my surgery they kept reassuring me with how well everything was going and were very professional.” – A. A.

So grateful
“Dr. Buhrmann of the Ottawa Herzig Eye Institute gave me back my vision.  I feel so grateful! My previous surgeon was going to do the cataract operation but it kept getting delayed and then he retired!  By that time I had become legally blind. The Ottawa Herzig staff was very patient and I appreciate that.  My only suggestion is that they need to work out a way to let a patient know when an appointment has been delayed.” – Maria Amati

EyeDocs Ottawa is another great option for your cataract surgery needs. As a clinic, EyeDocs works on multiple optical issues including dry eyes, myopia, digital eye strain, and of course, cataracts.

One of the best things about this clinic is its pre-surgery check-ups for a lower price. In these check-ups, doctors can determine if the crystalline lens of a patient has already become too cloudy.

Once it’s determined that the lenses are too cloudy, patients may opt to have their cataracts removed.

Further, the clinic also offers prescription glasses designed to help patients see better even with cataracts. Although these glasses are only temporary solutions, it’s still a better option than having nothing to help patients see at all.

We also appreciate the clinic’s emergency care for cataract treatments.

Overall, the only issue we found with EyeDocs is the fact that it’s closed during weekends. Many patients prefer going to the doctor when they don’t have work to do, so it’s a shame that this establishment cannot cater to them then.

The pricing of its services can also be better. But overall, the clinic is a great option because of the multiple services it offers and the pre-surgery check-ups it has made available.

Pros

  • Emergency care
  • Pre-surgery check-ups
  • Numerous locations in Ottawa
  • Has its own online store for eyewear

Cons

  • Closed on Fridays & weekends
  • Pricey
