The 5 Best Retirement Homes in Barrhaven for the Most Relaxing Golden Years

Care and Support: We sought retirement homes that provide comprehensive care, from assisted living to specialized support for residents, ensuring they can meet a wide range of senior needs.

Safety and Security: We selected communities that prioritize resident safety through established protocols and reliable emergency systems.

Community: We searched for establishments that foster a strong sense of belonging, where residents can join activities, connect with others, and never feel isolated.

Amenities: We included retirement homes with inviting communal spaces and well-equipped facilities, such as a fitness centre, to help residents stay active and comfortable.

When my aunt decided it was finally time to trade her garden shears for a life of morning tai chi and brewed tea, we dove into the search for the perfect retirement facility.

What we learned was that finding the right one isn’t just about amenities, but also about warmth, community, and that feeling of home.

Barrhaven, with its friendly neighborhoods and peaceful parks, offers several gems that make retirement feel less like slowing down and more like stepping into a well-earned chapter of ease and joy.

In this guide, we’ll explore the best retirement homes in Barrhaven that balance comfort, care, and connection for your loved one’s relaxing golden years.

How much does it cost to move to a retirement home in Barrhaven?

V!VA Barrhaven is a Canadian-owned and operated retirement community that opened in 2016. It’s conveniently located near several medical and health services, with easy access to major highways.

Many residents appreciate their spacious suites. Even the studio-type unit offers ample room and includes everything needed for a comfortable stay, including a cozy bedroom, a spacious walk-in closet, and an emergency call button system, among others.

The community also boasts impressive amenities. The facilities include a fitness centre, a bistro-cafe, and a movie theatre, making it easy for residents to stay active, social, and entertained.

But what we like most is their compassionate and caring staff. One person we interviewed shared how a nurse comforted her mother, a testament to the team’s genuine kindness.

However, it’s worth noting that they don’t offer memory care, so they may not be the best home for seniors with cognitive conditions, such as dementia and schizophrenia.

Pros

  • Spacious suites
  • Excellent amenities
  • Convenient location
  • Highly compassionate staff

Cons

  • No memory care service

We highly recommend them

“Our Mom has been a resident at Viva Barrhaven for just over a year. To say she was reluctant to go into a retirement home would be a huge understatement but after an adjustment period she has really become a happy member of this community. At 93 she has made new friends and meets with them over a coffee in the cafe. There often is music in Mel’s bar and lots of fun celebrations. The most amazing part of Viva is the staff who are genuinely interested in each resident and their families. To watch how happy people are while working there is truly heart warming. If you are wondering about Viva for your loved one, go check it out, my family highly recommends it.”

Such a wonderful community

“Thank you Natasha for the wonderful tour and introduction to VIVA Barrhaven. It is obvious that there is such a wonderful community spirit amongst the staff and with the residences. The common coffee area ‘Perks’ was bustling with activity and energy. After seeing all what VIVA offers for activities and having a good discussion with Natasha, we then enjoyed a delicious lunch in the dining room. The servers and staff were engaging and attentive, food options plenty and delicious. Natasha , specifically thank you too – you are professional , genuine, and caring and made this a truly great experience. Thank you Wendy and Peter Werner”

Their general and medical transportation services make it easy for residents to get to important appointments or enjoy group outings.

The community’s amenities are impressive. They have recreational facilities like a swimming pool and hot tub to offer not only entertainment but also relaxation and therapeutic benefits.

The suites here come with different floor plans, allowing residents to choose a space that best fits their needs and preferences.

That said, their limited nighttime staff can be a concern, as it may affect response times if multiple residents need urgent assistance at once.

Pros

  • Has a wide range of amenities

  • Provides general and medical transportation services
  • Has various suite floor plans

Cons

  • Limited staff at night

Our only concern is the comments we heard from some residents about bed bugs.

Cons

  • Pest issues

Our family member is receiving the special care they need by qualified and compassionate staff members. We are happy we chose City View Retirement for our family and would recommend them to anyone looking for a safe, clean, and modern retirement home for their aging parent. Our first impression was extremely positive while taking the tour of the home, I strongly recommend you request a tour and see for yourself.”

Ottawa’s best privately owned retirement home

“City View in my opinion is Ottawa’s best privately owned retirement home. A brand new building that offers independent and assisted living with large rooms at a great price. Every time I visit it’s super clean. The residents are happy and they are always doing activities. I even seen the owner playing the piano once. The nursing staff are great and are always around. They must have a great chef because the food is awesome. I’d recommend City View to anyone looking to have a secure and worry free environment for a great price compared to other homes.”

We can’t thank them enough

“Barrhaven Manor was home for Dad for his final 7 months. He transitioned seamlessly from assisted respite care, to palliative care, to end-of-life care. The entire staff treated Dad, Mum and I with the utmost respect and care. The Manor PSW’s and Carefor PSW’s showed Dad such love and dignity and they are all so much appreciated for their hard work and dedication as Dad declined. We couldn’t have done this without all of you. Everyone made sure Dad knew this was HIS home away from home and made his stay memorable, enjoyable and comfortable for all of us. We can’t thank the Manor enough!”

– Albert Ethier Laura Lauzon (Albert and Laura), Google Review

Very much appreciated

“Barrhaven Manor has definitely been a positive example of caring for its residents. My parents have been there almost 3 years and the staff and care team have always been there to support. The staff works as a true team, helping out each other’s functions wherever needed. They have successfully protected the residents during Covid while also endeavouring to provide safe entertainment options and care. Their creativity in supporting residents has been very much appreciated.”

Address: 22 Barnstone Dr

Phone: +1 343 600 5665

Business hours: Open 24 hours

Website

Operating under Venvi, Prince of Wales Retirement Living is a well-established community located near many parks, including Clarke Fields Park and Chapman Mills Conservation Area, and the Rideau River as well.

We appreciate that it’s one of the few retirement homes in town offering comprehensive care. With six different living options, they accommodate both short- and long-term stays, depending on each resident’s level of required support.

However, their suite selection is quite limited, offering only studio and one-bedroom units. This might be a downside if you’re looking for a spacious living arrangement for your loved one.

Still, the suites that are available come with convenient amenities, such as a phone, cable TV, and heating system.

Residents also enjoy three freshly prepared meals each day and weekly housekeeping.

We like that the community keeps residents active with its range of recreational activities. There are games like billiards and shuffleboard that not only provide entertainment but also help keep the mind sharp through strategy and friendly competition.

Pros

  • Comprehensive care options
  • Great location
  • Excellent selection of recreational activities
  • Great in-suite amenities

Cons

  • Limited suite options

Definitely the right fit

“Finding a residence for a family member is a very difficult process. The team at Revera made it easy. This was the second home we tried for my mom and it is definitely the right fit. The staff are kind and supportive. My mom likes the various activities and they have taken the time to understand her needs based on the changing medical situation. I appreciate that they are available to discuss the changing care plan with me and seem to care about my mom. She says she enjoys the variety of the meals, and how nice the people are and how clean it is.”

Excellent retirement community

“I have been a resident at Revera Prince of Wales since February 2018. After visiting several residences in the Ottawa region, my family and I finally chose this one. The warm welcome I received from the administrative staff was one of the factors in my decision. I would like to extend my appreciation to the entire staff for their kindness and professionalism. The variety of activities (social games, movies, live entertainment, etc.) that the residence provides makes my stay all the more enjoyable.”
