The Best Driving Instructors in Ottawa

Finding the right driving instructor or school can take time. We used the criteria below to narrow down our options.

Reasonable rates – Does it charge fairly for the services it offers?

Let’s Go Driving School is a good choice for driving lessons because of the wide selection of lessons it offers. These lessons are taught by professional teachers and are done not just through driving but also in classrooms.

We like its classrooms that are fitted with their own driving simulators. These simulators are unlike the ones commonly seen in video games but are more realistic in terms of rules and controls that you follow.

We are also fans of Let’s Go’s online courses. Sometimes, students may not be able to go to the school to learn, so online learning makes everything convenient for both student and instructor.

Let’s Go also offers road tests that focus more on road signs and theoretical driving so that drivers who learned how to drive in an informal setting can get a refresher course.

Speaking of refreshers, this driving school also offers practice courses that are designed to improve a driver’s existing skills. If you already have a license but haven’t driven in a while and need to remember the basics, this type of course is perfect for you.

Unfortunately, Let’s Go Driving School doesn’t have a huge selection of vehicles to study. If you are able to get past that, it is definitely a solid pick for one of the best driving schools in the city.

Pros

  • Open everyday
  • Online courses

Cons

  • No selection of large vehicles

The Young Drivers Ottawa South Driving School or YD is another incredible choice for a driving school in the city, especially for teens of the right age who want to learn how to drive as early as possible.

What makes YD special is its courses. The school has specific programs for different aspects of driving, particularly a defensive driving course, parking course, and 3-point turn courses.

Separating these courses compartmentalizes the lessons and makes them easier to learn, especially for younger students who have never taken the wheel before.

We also like the school’s theoretical lessons, which focus on more practical tips, such as hand gestures. With these, it doesn’t just cover the basics but also provides tactics to help its students be more confident and excellent drivers.

In this driving school’s curriculum, risk perception, emergency braking, and near-crash avoidance are also taught to the students, which is something we greatly appreciate. These lessons, after all, can save a driver’s life.

On the downside of things, YD does not have many options in regards to the selection of vehicles to learn about.

Other than that, it’s definitely a great school that teaches aspiring drivers not just about driving but also provides great tips for being safe on the road.

Pros

  • Responsible driving course
  • Numerous locations

Cons

  • No large vehicle options
  • Closed on weekends

Calmed me down

Graham was my driving instructor, and he did an amazing job of making me feel calm and comfortable during my lessons. He made driving enjoyable by pushing me outside of my comfort zone and having a great sense of humour. His advice and demonstrations on how to react in emergency situations have especially helped me. I passed my road test on the first attempt:) I highly recommend it! – Grace Horton

Fun and reassuring

Graham was awesome! He made my lessons fun and entertaining while in-depth teaching me the rules of the road and how to drive safely, smart and confident. Not only did he make it fun, he also made sure to reassure me when I knew I didn’t do the best on an exercise, which made it easier to want to try again. I never thought driving lessons would be a blast but having Graham it was inevitable. I loved our chats and hope to come back and refresh with him for my G. Thanks for everything Graham! – Mara Jacobs

Safe2Pass Driving School is also one of Ottawa’s best options for driving lessons. It offers a good range of courses from Beginner Driver Education to practice and refresher courses.

We are happy with the options Safe2Pass gives when it comes to its services. It offers its courses online, which is good news for those who just need refreshers.

The school also offers a special course focused on defensive driving, which is always appreciated. We think these types of courses can contribute to our society by producing safer and more mindful drivers.

We understand that many drivers are aggressive, especially those who think of themselves as experienced. So learning defensive driving will make our streets safer.

We also like that Safe2Pass offers programs for a whole class but also has private lessons for students who need more personalized and attentive teaching. If you’re introverted or just want to learn faster, this is a good option for you.

The downside with all of these different lessons is the price. Not everyone can afford expensive fees, so we suggest calling the school first to learn about its packages.

Overall, we believe Safe2Pass’ defensive driving lessons are the best courses it offers, allowing you to learn safer methods of driving.

Pros

  • Defensive driving courses
  • Open everyday

Cons

  • Pricey

Best instructor I’ve had

“Kaz is the best driving instructor I’ve ever had (there’s been a few…)! I’m a nervous driver, but he made me comfortable and calm, and most importantly, confident. He was clear and informative but also very personable and I just enjoyed chatting with him during our lessons in general! 11/10, will recommend, and will take lessons with him again before my G test.” – Emily Hotton

Very kind

“My driving instructor was Raqia and she gave me the confidence I needed for my G test. Practicing by myself helped with the mechanics of how to drive but she helped me with road rules and what to look out for on the tests. We drilled it over and over again what I should expect on my test and she was super encouraging and very kind. — Dahlia

Ottawa Driving School Inc. is another awesome choice for your driving instructor needs. With multiple instructors at its helm, you’ll be sure to get one that knows the roads of the city and the various driving rules.

What we especially liked about this school are its course options and discounted packages.

It is able to offer a course that’s mainly focused on driving. This is a good option for those who already learned classroom theory and just need a practical lesson.

The school also has online BDE (Beginner’s Driving Education) courses available for those who need a refresher on road safety and road rules.

Uniquely, this school offers a senior re-testing course, made for seniors who are required to take a road test.

We believe learning to drive should cover not just aspects of controlling a car, but also safety. And we think the courses here are perfect for that.

The only downside we noticed is the school’s website, which can be hard to navigate. Luckily, it has a working phone number. Anyone can call it to ask for more specific details regarding the courses or fees.

Finally, we really appreciate that the school’s lessons are actually not as expensive as its competitors. If you are under a budget and you need a driving school fast, definitely check out this option.

Pros

  • Offers discounts
  • Open on Saturdays

Cons

  • Outdated website

A winner of the Top Choice Driving School Award in the Ottawa region and also a school that’s been around since 1999, it is safe to say that the Universal Driving School Ottawa is an experienced institution.

Aside from the unquestionable experience, we are also big fans of the fact that this school is open every day.

Imagine that, every day, a new student learns how to drive from this institution and eventually learns to maneuver around the city of Ottawa.

For the school’s courses, it offers lessons on road safety and defensive driving, which can be taken on-site or online. We really appreciate the variety of these lessons since driving can be dangerous, especially if you have incomplete knowledge of the road.

Universal Driving School Ottawa also has packaged lessons that are more affordable for those on a budget.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to vehicle choice, but it does have courses on specific types of vehicles that can be learned in the classroom or online.

Another thing we like about this school is its vehicle rental feature. This allows students to rent vehicles to drive for the duration of their driving course.

Overall, with the courses it offers and its award-winning services, we believe Universal Driving School Ottawa is one of the best driving schools in the city.

Pros

  • Award-winning
  • Online courses
  • Open everyday

Cons

  • Not many options for vehicles
