Top 5 Doctors in Ottawa
For any illness or health concern you may have, you wouldn’t want to go to a mediocre practitioner. You’d want only the top doctors in Ottawa who are well-versed and experienced in their field.
That’s what today’s listicle is all about, in fact! We also made sure to discuss the potential costs (discussed in the following section) and other related concerns (found in the FAQ section at the end).
How Much Do Doctors in Ottawa Charge?
If the procedure or services you need are covered by OHIP, you won’t have to pay for practically anything. You can also look at what your personal health insurance includes if you aren’t too sure about coverage.
We feature a variety of medical specializations in this listicle, so it would be practical to reach out to your doctor or insurance provider to find out if you’re at least partially covered on some services.
Most uninsured services (or those not covered by OHIP) are listed under a specialist’s or clinic’s page to prevent confusion. If they aren’t, it’s good to inquire about them before booking an appointment.
Below is a table of some uninsured services from a couple of the doctors and clinics in Ottawa we’re reviewing today.
Other uninsured pay-per-services could include prescription renewals, doctor’s forms for school, work, tax credits, and other news, and administrative costs.
The Top Doctors in Ottawa
We carefully selected today’s list of top doctors in Ottawa with the following criteria in mind:
- Overall good feedback from verified patients (since they’re living proof of the doctor’s competence)
- Vast expertise and skills in their specializations
- Reasonable rates especially for uninsured services
Now it’s time to see which doctor is a good fit for your needs. Please note that this listicle is done in no particular order.
1. Dr. Roland Sabbagh (Orleans Cardiopulmonary Group)
Dr. Roland Sabbagh is a cardiologist who is part of the Orleans Cardiopulmonary Group. He specializes in congenital heart diseases, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia treatment, and hypertension.
The clinic has been serving the greater Ottawa area since 1999. Its primary focus is on respiratory care, cardio-metabolic, and other cardiac-related services.
The clinic’s website (which could do with some updating) lists the fees for some uninsured services and those not covered by OHIP, but it would be good to specify those that are covered, as well. It also mentions a strict no-show fee (a whopping $100!) to encourage patients’ timely cancellation practices.
Along with the other specialists at the clinic, Dr. Sabbagh is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He’s a bilingual doctor (French and English) whose patient feedback typically mentions how well looked after they feel under his care.
In fact, several of Dr. Sabbagh’s patients have expressed appreciation for how he goes out of his way to thoroughly explain the potential procedures they will undergo using illustrations and even videos for them.
Pros
- Most services covered by OHIP
- Bilingual doctor (French and English)
- Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Cons
- Website needs information update and navigation
- Steep $100 no-show fee
- The clinic is closed on weekends

Dr. Sabbagh was very personable, kind, and truly cares about the wellbeing
“I had gone to the Orleans Cardiopulmonary Group which was previously known as Asclepios Cardiology to have an echocardiogram done by one of their technicians her name was Terry, She had made me feel very comfortable during and after the procedure. After I had an appointment with Dr. Sabbagh who was very personable, kind and explained everything to me in great detail in regards to my heart condition. I would say he is one of those doctors who truly care about your well-being unlike some. Also to mention that the staff were all amazing although they all had masks and face shields I knew I was receiving a warm welcome into the clinic. I give this clinic 5+ stars! I was very happy with my visit.” – Diane G.

Dr. Abishek Tuli is a family doctor who holds a clinic at the Appletree Medical Group. He specializes in general internal medicine with a focus on hypertension, nephrology, and diabetes.
Verified patient feedback on Dr. Tuli often mention how considerate and caring he is in treating patients with diabetes and even diabetes-related acne.

He does virtual appointments which are convenient and practical in this day and age. There are also walk-in/telemedicine options at the nearest available clinics, though these are subject to different wait times and availability.
Still, we appreciate the convenience of these services especially since they’re quite generous with information on doctor availability, limitations, and wait times.
Pros
- Offers virtual appointments
- Diabetes-focused practice
- Consistently good patient feedback
Cons
- The clinic has no BBB accreditation
- Doesn’t provide a service fee guide
- Telemedicine might have different wait times and availability

In the past, he served as the Emergency Department Staff Physician at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital and provided emergency medical care at the Mindemoya Hospital. Because the clinic partners with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and Manna Research Group, Dr. Matin is the principal investigator of clinical research, too.
Dr. Matin’s patients describe him as having a good bedside manner with patients and an understanding way of listening to their concerns. Several have also described how he follows up with his patients’ other doctors.
Patients can book an appointment with Dr. Matin using Greenbelt Family Health Team’s convenient online booking tool from Monday to Friday. New patients can try booking, but there’s a pretty long waitlist that could take up to two years for accommodation!

Customer Reviews
Dr. Matin is an amazing caring man
“Dr. Matin himself is an amazing caring man who not only listens but takes his time to understand the problem. Not only does he send perceptions renewals via portal when we are away he also stays in touch with my urologist from the USA and together they make sure I am getting the best care. And that they are both aggressive (*agree not aggressive it won’t let me edit)on the medication I should be taking. This is above and beyond his job on both doctors’ sides. They do not have to communicate and send files and faxes back and forth but they do and it truly means a lot to me.” – Andrea G.
Never felt rushed, followed up on specific questions
“Dr. Matin and all the staff at Greenbelt Family HealthTeam are amazing!
I’ve been Dr. Matin’s patient for over 5 years now, and I get appointments when I need them, and everyone from the front desk staff, to the nurse practitioners, and the other doctors have been courteous and kind. I have multiple health issues, and although time is limited during an appointment, I have never felt rushed. Dr. Matin has followed up on specific questions through the My Health Portal and sends prescriptions directly to my pharmacist.
I am very pleased with Dr. Matin as my GP!” – Susan L.
4. Dr. Kevin Butterfield (Argyle Associates)
As a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, it comes as a relief that Dr. Kevin J. Butterfield is a bilingual doctor. His specialization in maxillofacial oncology and reconstructive surgery requires the kind of gentle bedside manner that explains pre and post-operative care to patients in both French and English.
In fact, this is a consistent theme when it comes to his patient’s feedback. Descriptions about “extremely thorough post-op care” and “efficient post-op” instructions are often mentioned by satisfied clients.
He’s done plenty of research and several publications on the topics of obstructive sleep apnea as well as practical guides for dental surgeons and oncologists.
We find it pretty impressive that his subspecialties deal with oral metastatic cancers while his main bread and butter include more common procedures like wisdom tooth removal.
Still, it would be more impressive if the clinic had a fee guide for its procedures, especially those that aren’t covered by OHIP or insurance. But it’s a good thing that insurance and financing terms are available for patients.
Pros
- Specializes in maxillofacial oncology and reconstructive surgery
- Insurance and financing terms are available
- Bilingual doctor (French and English)
- Gives thorough post-op care
Cons
- Somewhat confusing clinic hours
- No fee guide provided for procedures
- The clinic has no BBB accreditation
Customer Reviews
Explained the wisdom tooth extraction from start to finish
“The staff at the Barrhaven clinic is outstanding. The nurse manager went out of her way to calm my daughter’s anxiety concerning the sedation process and explained the wisdom tooth extraction from start to finish. It worked like a charm. Post-op care was also extremely thorough, with detailed instructions for follow-up care that were clear and easy to understand. The doctor also came in to see how everyone was doing, he was excellent as I’m sure they all are. I highly recommend this clinic in particular for the exemplary caring and knowledgeable staff. Having oral surgery is usually not a pleasant experience, but my daughter and I can both attest, in this case, it was.” – Mary-Anne Lomas
Efficient, thorough, kind, & professional
“Efficient, thorough, kind, & professional ……EVERYONE I dealt with …..front desk! nurses! & of course DR. BUTTERFIELD…I only want to add to the post-op instructions ….. that we need to relax and be gentle with your mouth NO MATTER HOW GREAT YOU FEEL ON THAT SECOND DAY!” – Pamela Meunier
5. Dr. Jean-Philippe Bercier
For those who are interested in no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy procedures, it’s worth checking out Dr. Jean-Philippe Bercier. He also does circumcision and vasovasostomy, which is basically vasectomy reversal.
Dr. Bercier’s approach to vasectomy procedures is a minor 15-minute intervention that’s done with anesthesia and is described by patients as “mostly painless”. Patient feedback often mentions how quickly Dr. Bercier performs the procedure and how comfortable the entire process is.
He outlines the steps in a simple manner on his website. It’s the kind of information that’s concise, easy to understand, and highly informative so we appreciate that it’s available in both English and French versions.
But because vasectomies are considered permanent sterilization methods, it won’t necessarily mean that a reverse vasectomy would be successful.
A vasovasostomy procedure is also quite costly at $5,000 (including tax). It’s a procedure that’s unfortunately not covered by OHIP, though the consultation for it is free.
Pros
- No-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy
- Vasectomy is covered by OHIP
- Speedy and comfortable procedure
Cons
- Procedures don’t guarantee immediate sterilization
- Expensive vasectomy reversal procedure
- No fixed clinic hours
