Ring in 2025 With These Fun New Year’s Day Activities in Ottawa

In Ottawa, New Year’s celebrations come alive with a host of winter activities that let you embrace the season’s charm. From hiking and skating to skiing and snowshoeing, there are plenty of fun ways to welcome the year ahead.

For me, nothing says winter quite like skating on the Rideau Canal—the world’s largest naturally frozen rink. Stretching 7.8 km, I can glide from downtown Ottawa all the way to Carleton University.

And the best part? There are plenty of beavertail stands along the way, where I can grab a bite to refuel and sip hot chocolate to stay warm.

If you want to go hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing, the National Capital Greenbelt and Gatineau Park are must-visit destinations. They have groomed trails and stunning scenery.

Adding a playful twist to the festivities, Escape Manor has crafted a hockey-themed scavenger hunt to honor the 2025 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. You must answer trivia, take selfies, and overcome challenges to win amazing prizes.

Even on New Year’s Day, downtown Ottawa doesn’t slow down. Museums and restaurants remain open, giving you the perfect opportunity to kick off the year with enriching experiences.
