10 Things To Do at Rideau Falls for a Perfect Day Out

I’ll admit it: I wasn’t exactly expecting to find waterfalls in the middle of Ottawa. When I think of city adventures, my mind usually goes straight to museums, markets, or maybe a coffee shop crawl.

But when someone casually mentioned Rideau Falls, I knew I had to check it out. And wow, was I glad I did.

There’s something mesmerizing about watching two cascades meet the Ottawa River, surrounded by a mix of history and nature. It’s the kind of place where you can just stop, take a deep breath, and forget you’re minutes away from downtown.

Trust me, you’ll want to see this place for yourself.

Rideau Falls is located in the New Edinburgh neighborhood. The falls are split into two sections, east and west, by Green Island.

How to Get There

By Car: From downtown Ottawa, head north on Sussex Drive and continue for about 2.5 km. Look for parking along Sussex Drive or nearby streets near Green Island.

By Public Transit: Take an OC Transpo bus that stops near Sussex Drive and Stanley Avenue. From the stop, it’s a short 5–10 minute walk to the falls.

By Bike: Use the Ottawa River Pathway, which connects to Sussex Drive near Green Island. Follow the bike-friendly path to reach the falls.

Birdwatching might sound like something your grandparents are into, but trust me, it’s a vibe here. The falls and the nearby river attract a variety of birds, from mallards paddling around to the occasional heron strutting its stuff.

You might see ducks paddling by, hear the melodic chirping of songbirds, or even spot a majestic heron fishing by the riverbank.

Even if you don’t know a robin from a sparrow, there’s something super satisfying about watching them go about their little bird lives while you chill by the water.
