Where to Buy a Piano in Ottawa

The sound of piano keys playing on a good Sunday morning makes a home feel happy and alive. Getting a good piano for yourself and your family can actually be considered a new milestone.

Whether you are already a pro pianist or a beginner, nothing beats the joy of finally getting your hands on your very own ivory keys.

It’s a solid investment that can allow you to make good musical memories. Plus, it makes the house look a little grander too!

To help you out in finding the best ones, we made this list of the best piano stores in Ottawa.

Let us guide you through these amazing musical stores that offer the best piano brands and deals in town.

How much is a piano?

The range of piano costs is fascinatingly wide. An average piano may cost somewhere between $3,850 to $8,335, but high-end grand pianos can go for as high as $83,345 to $243,625!

That’s expensive, yes! But there are a lot of factors that influence the price of this classic and timeless musical instrument.

Things like the brand name are a great factor, given that this is directly associated with the quality of sound and craftsmanship of any instrument.

There’s also the type and size of the piano too plus the type of materials used in its production—from hard-to-find hardwoods, cast iron plates, brass pedals, etc.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the prices can be so high. To give you a good idea of piano prices, here’s a table of the usual average cost of pianos from the most popular brands in the market today.

Brand UprightBaby Grand Grand Concert
Steinway$49,815$89,373$219,265
Yamaha$28,209$44,879$229,523
FazioliN/A$173,104$368,006
Kawaii$10,899$27,568$279,530
Bosendorfer$98,733$156,435$294,917
Young Chang$8,835$16,656$25,632.18
Brodmann$15,387$34,608$203,878
Baldwin$12,822$27,434$82,058
Seiler$33,358$89,307$242,359
Bluthner$46,161$116,685$275,961

Other options available for those who are on a tight budget but really want to play the piano would be getting a digital one or a keyboard.

There’s a variety of digital pianos and keyboards that you can get for as low as $256. Price may still vary, and professional-level ones can go for as high as $8,975.

Getting your own piano is no cheap task, but it’s definitely a worthy investment that you can actually pass on to the next generation.

Finding the Right Piano Store

Since having your piano is one serious investment that you need to make, you have to know a good place that can offer you quality ones and give you the best value for your money.

In this list, we considered different factors that can help you assess if a music store is a good match for your needs.

Quality of instruments: Since pianos tend to be very expensive, we checked if the stores offer good, reputable brands that are known to have excellent craftsmanship and amazing sound quality.
In-store experience: What makes a music store stand out from any other kind of shop is the experience of being surrounded by instruments. As such, its market is geared to musicians, and it would be nice if they can enjoy exploring and trying the instruments there, so we factored this in.

Store organization: A part of the experience is also how accessible and easy it is to locate instruments and if each display has enough room, so we considered this as well.

Staff assistance and expertise: Whether you are a pro or a beginner, a music store is a good one if it has staff that are knowledgeable about the instruments that they purchase.
Convenience: Pianos can be big purchases, literally. That’s why we also considered the services a store offers for the convenience of their buying customers.

Delivery options: They should be able to transport your new piano to your home in a safe and efficient manner.

Purchasing convenience: We also considered if they have different means to make it easy for customers to buy, whether through easy modes of payment, buying platforms, promos, and discounts.
Competitive prices: We understand that purchasing a good piano can be expensive, but we still considered those who are able to offer fair prices or those who can also provide cheaper options for those who need it.
Customer service: As with any business, offering amiable services to their customers is a must.

Responsiveness: We also checked how they respond to inquiries and other matters that require their assistance whether in-store, through calls, or online.

Accountability: Because a piano is an expensive purchase, we checked if the stores have warranties for their products and uncomplicated purchasing policies.

We also noted how they resolve issues that may arise from your purchases.

From their name itself, Ottawa Pianos actually comes on top of mind when it comes to all things piano here and around the area.

When it comes to anything piano-related, they’re definitely experts in this field, catering to pianists here in Ottawa for over 52 years now.

Their piano selections are mostly Yamaha as the brand’s exclusive authorized piano dealer. If you are interested in buying a Yamaha, this is the perfect place to go to.

Plus, Ottawa Pianos is also the official home of the Yamaha Music School here in Ottawa. Their classes are available not just for kids but also for adult piano learners too.

They also offer other brands like Perl River and used pianos of other reputable brands.

Their catalogue of pianos is actually quite interesting because Yamaha has been really innovating when it comes to piano-making. Aside from the classic acoustic pianos, their offering also includes various hybrid pianos where traditional and digital meet.

Aside from selling pianos, they also offer concert piano rentals. So just in case you need one for a special event but don’t really intend on purchasing one, this is a very good service that you can avail of.

They’ll do the delivery, bench tuning, and pickup for you so there’s really not much hassle involved.

They have a very knowledgeable staff and expert technicians that are available for repair and tuning services too. They are also the official service center for Yamaha pianos in the area, which is very convenient for Yamaha piano owners and buyers.

What we find most interesting about them is their genuine love for music, which they show by supporting musicians in the local scene. There are times when they would offer their concert rooms and grand pianos to local musicians and students for free.

When a music store is genuinely in love with music and the craft that comes along with it, it shows in the kind of service they provide to their customers, and that’s why a lot of musicians and learners love Ottawa Pianos

Lauzon Music is arguably one of the most trusted musical instruments stores in Ottawa.

Catering to musicians in Ottawa since 1945, they have long since reached the rest of Canada and also offer to ship wherever in the country.

They hold a variety of musical instruments from reputable brands—from guitars to pianos and other such audio equipment.

As for the pianos they have in their catalogue, they’re made by renowned brands such as Seiler and Wm. Knabe & Co. for acoustic ones. In fact, they are actually appointed as the authorized dealer of Seiler pianos in the National Capital Region.

They also have digital and hybrid pianos and other piano and keyboard accessories.

Of course, coming from well-known brands, their new pianos come with a hefty price. But the good news here is that they also offer used pianos that are sold at a lower price.

However, since these are secondhand pianos, you may expect these items to be quick-moving and limited.

If you already have a piano but need help to have it fixed, they also offer piano repairs and tuning services in their world-class piano refinishing facility. There they can get your keys sounding pristine again.

Their staff members are very knowledgeable when it comes to the instruments they have and music in general. You’ll definitely enjoy the experience of giving them a visit as you try out all these magnificent musical brands.

Plus, they don’t just offer quality products; they also have an outstanding way of serving customers. From in-store assistance down to after-sales concerns, their staff is doing a fantastic job.

Yes, the instruments can be pricey, but that’s just expected for the brand names they carry. But if you really want premium quality instruments and premium quality service, this is the place to go.

Customer Reviews

Absolutely Fabulous.

I recently bought an Electronic Piano after a relaxed and informative presentation of the different models. When I assembled the unit at home, there was a small problem. Everything looked perfect but the keyboard cover would not open on one side. The first thing I was told was not to worry, all would be repaired. A day later, I was told to just bring it in and that I could exchange mine for the floor model if I wanted to. Before I could, I was contacted again and asked if I had a van. No I don’t. They offered to simply deliver the new one and pick up the “old” one so no disassembly required. 30 minutes later…problem solved. I also take my guitar here. Is a first class operation. – Ray Groebner

Best music store ever

One of the best music store that we have ever seen in Canada and USA (even in Europe). Guitars and pianos are magnificence with very high quality : a real museum !!! It is more for professional player, however even if your are a simple amateur player, they let you try all the instruments without forcing you to buy. We have played on a 171K$ concert piano and also learnt some chord on a Taylor guitar with Mr Lauzon, who just gave us some more fun….We stayed there for an hour and should have stayed longer.

We definitely should have bought something from this store. But It is never too late…. A very good music store to visite. – Emeline Penin

The Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa is definitely a place to visit and experience aside from buying pianos from. When you visit their showroom, you are treated to a “Red Carpet, White Glove Service,” which is really a reflection of the Steinway brand.

Their array of pianos includes Steinway, Boston, and Essex. All of which are under Steinway & Sons.

They come in different sizes—from uprights to grands—that guarantee top-notch craftsmanship.

But they also offer a fine selection of used pianos from many other reputable brands like Kawai, Schimmel, Bosendorfer, etc.

What’s great here is that you can also purchase a piano online too, and they’ll have it delivered to you. This is ideal if you already know the specifics of the unit you want to purchase.

However, we do recommend visiting, especially if this is your first time buying one to get the feel and also learn more from their very knowledgeable staff.

Steinways are actually favourites of concert performers and even virtuosos. In fact, they actually have a list of concert halls that have a concert grand Steinway on stage.

That speaks much of the quality of the pianos they offer.

Other services that they offer are piano rentals and recital hall bookings. Their 70-seat recital space is something worth noting especially for piano students and music majors.

If you are a music teacher, they actually offer a Teacher Partnership Program that provides a Teacher Platinum Card. This comes with perks on pricing, print music, and music accessories that can be advantageous for you and your students.

One downside here though is that their location is around 14 kilometres away from the heart of Ottawa. Anyway, a 15-minute drive won’t hurt because the experience you can enjoy there is worth the quick trip.

Being a place dedicated only to pianos, you can really see the passion they have not just for the instruments but also for the craft. They have an excellent staff that goes out of their way to not just explain details but also inspire piano enthusiasts and aspiring pianists too.

What will convince you to really buy your piano here is not the pushy sales talk but the genuine love for all things piano.

Pros

  • Official representative of Steinway & Sons in Ottawa
  • Guaranteed high-quality pianos
  • Passionate and music-loving staff
  • Offers a Teacher Partnership Program
  • Their recital hall is open for bookings

Cons

  • Pricey pianos
  • Location is a little remote
  • Closed on Sundays

Kawai is a slightly more affordable brand of pianos, and that’s what exactly you will find in Capital City Keyboards.

They actually have a wide selection of pianos, including acoustic and digital pianos. They have brands like Roland, Casio, Korg, and Yamaha, which offer really great digital pianos if you find the acoustic ones too expensive.

Located in Nepean, they not only sell pianos but have the Ottawa Music School. Here, they offer various lessons for different musical instruments aside from the piano, such as guitars, violin, cello, and woodwinds.

These lessons cater to all kinds of students, young and old. And these are all done in private sessions so their students get the full attention in every session.

They are pretty much a favourite among beginners and those who prefer digital pianos because of the importance they give to learning. Their staff takes time to explain details extensively so their customers can make good decisions upon purchase.

Customer Reviews

Consistent excellent customer service

I cannot say enough about the exceptional customer service provided by Andre Dore at Capital City Keyboards.

First, he spent an hour on the phone with me answering my many detailed questions, reviewing and comparing digital pianos.

In the store, I received similar attention, information, details, knowledgeable demonstration.

There was zero pressure to buy ( even though I was there with that intention) and I was given ample time to digest the information and make an informed decision.

This was a year ago. I recently went back with a friend who received similar attention and excellent customer service. – Agnesa Stoyanov

Accommodating and honest

My dad and I went piano shopping to surprise my mom for Christmas. Andre was very helpful, knowledgeable, accommodating and honest. We were prepared to spend more money but Andre sold us on a digital piano that was less expensive and much more suitable for our situation. My mom was so surprised and is totally in love her new piano. – Rachel Hatt

Another option for those who are looking for more practical options would be Steve’s Music. Providing local musicians with instruments since 1981, this locally-owned business originally only caters to Ottawa.

Today, they have expanded with four more branches in Montreal, Greenfield Park, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, and Toronto.  Plus, their online shopping store provides a very convenient way to purchase their instruments if you can’t drop by their store.

Unlike some of the previous stores we mentioned earlier, Steve’s Music is not particularly a piano shop, as they offer a lot of other instruments as well.

But they do offer a good range of keyboards and digital pianos, which are very good alternatives to purchasing expensive acoustic ones.  They are very much a great option for those just starting to play the piano or those who want the perks of having a digital instrument.

Unlike traditional acoustic pianos, these digital keys don’t require much tuning, and they also actually produce different musical sounds. They’re ideal for those who play music for a living or those who actually produce songs.

That’s not mentioning the fact that these are way less expensive too. You’ll find a really huge range of keyboard brands in their inventory like Yamaha, Roland, Korg, Casio, Boss, Pioneer, and Alesis, just to name a few.

That being said, we included Steve’s Music on this list because they have a fantastic range of keyboards compared to other general music instrument retailers.

Though more of a general music store, it’s still a great option for those looking for other alternatives that can fit the budget-conscious. They even have Flexiti financing for more convenient payment terms.

Their customer service is pretty much very transparent and flexible too. Any issues with your purchases can be easily resolved with no hassle.

For practical reasons and options, we think that Steve’s Music deserves a spot on this list too!

Pros

  • Offers a decent range of brands for keyboards
  • Can be a cheaper option over traditional piano stores
  • Also offers online shopping through their website
  • Relaxed and friendly environment
  • Transparent and flexible customer service

Cons

  • No acoustic piano selections
