The 5 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Ottawa for Peace of Mind and Quality Care

Quality of Care: We prioritized facilities that offer personalized care plans tailored to each resident’s needs, ensuring they receive the right balance of support and independence.

Staff-to-Resident Ratio: We looked for places that maintain a high staff-to-resident ratio, guaranteeing more individual attention and faster response times for any assistance required.

Range of Services: We focused on communities that offer a broad spectrum of care options, from help with daily activities to more personalized support.

Safety Measures: We looked for communities that offer both 24/7 support and advanced medical services, allowing seniors to age in place without needing to relocate as their care needs evolve.

Amenities and Activities: We sought out communities that provide a rich array of amenities and activities to promote social engagement, mental stimulation, and physical wellness.

Affordability: We considered the balance between quality and cost, ensuring the facilities offer competitive pricing without sacrificing care standards or comfort.

I was helping my friend’s aunt find a place where she could get the support she needed. She wasn’t ready for a nursing home, but living alone wasn’t an option anymore.

So, we dove headfirst into research—and wow, talk about overwhelming! Every place promised “amazing care”, and by the end, all the brochures looked the same. If you’re here, chances are you’re in the same boat.

Thankfully, after all that digging, we came across some seriously solid assisted living facilities in Ottawa. Trust me, I learned a thing or two in the process. So, I’ve rounded up the top-notch care communities for you.

Hopefully, this list saves you the hassle and helps you find the perfect fit!

How much do assisted living services cost in Ottawa?

Office Hours: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM daily

If I had to pick the best option, I’d definitely go with Governors Walk Retirement Residence. With years of experience, the focus is always on keeping residents comfortable and safe.

They’ve earned a solid reputation with their all-in-one assisted living services. They take care of meds, help people get around, and offer personal care support, perfect for keeping a loved one in good hands.

The rooms are another highlight—spacious, clean, and bright with big windows that make it feel like home rather than just a facility. That small detail really makes a difference.

What’s even better is that they have these therapeutic programs, such as cognitive fitness and music therapy. It’s not just about taking care of their patients’ bodies, but their minds and emotions, too.

The only drawback is that the meals sometimes aren’t served hot. This is kind of disappointing, especially since mealtime is something many residents look forward to.

Pros

  • All-in-one assisted living services
  • Spacious facilities
  • Provides therapeutic programs

Cons

  • Meals aren’t always hot when served

Safe and secure facility

“My mother moved into Governor’s Walk right after a hospital stay. The moment she stepped inside her unit she said that it felt like home. She absolutely loved it! She was the happiest she had been in a long time. She told me she felt safe and secure. Most importantly, she told me how much the staff cared. I cannot say enough about how attentive and kind the staff are at Governor’s Walk. My mom said that the staff listened, were patient, and took the time to help her adjust to her new life. I feel so fortunate to have found such a wonderful place for my mom to spend her final days.”

Comfortable room and caring staff

“A member of my family was at Governor’s Walk for 6 days of respite care post-surgery in February 2024. We were happy with everything. The staff and the nurses were caring and interested yet non-intrusive. We saw several times when the staff went out of their way to help their resident (eg.; the receptionist getting a resident a blanket from another floor bc the resident was cold at movie night; a confused resident reassured that she wasn’t lost and taken back to her room.) The room was comfortable and charming with its bay window and walk-in shower. The renovations look great and there will soon be an activity room on the first floor. The food was good and varied. I highly recommend the bran muffins. Also the parking was plentiful and convenient so it made our visits easy. We would return here in an instant. The staff were sweet calling it a “Hotel Stay” not respite care! Thank you, Governor’s Walk.”

Warm and welcoming place

“My mother in law lives here. It is a warm and welcoming place. The staff are lovely, caring, patient and they know her name. The doctor on staff is a good listener and so kind to her. I find it a very cozy place, both in my mom’s room as well as the communal areas. None of these places are cheap today, but you get true value here for your money.”

Friendly, responsive, and helpful staff

“I absolutely concur with all of the positive reviews. My sister’s health deteriorated very suddenly and we needed more accessible living arrangements for her immediately. Carp Commons Retirement Village does a great job of balancing independence with support. It doesn’t have that “institutional” feel that you might expect from retirement living.

The caregivers there are great at making personalized care plans, and they’re super flexible. As needs change, so does the care, so it’s like having your own personal pit crew ready to help when needed.

They also keep things fun with movie nights, crafts, and events. Staying active and connected really lifts the mood. I’d probably want to join in, too!

But there is a tiny wrinkle though. It’s a smaller, popular spot, so space fills up fast. If you’re in a rush, a waiting list might be an issue.

Pros

  • Personalized care plan
  • Flexible caregivers
  • Lively social scene

Cons

  • Space can fill up fast

Customer Reviews

Friendly staff and an amazing place

“Carp Commons is an amazing place! My mother in law moved in December 2023 and loves it. She loves that the staff are all so friendly and helpful. Her studio room is just the perfect size! She loves the food each day! I can’t thank Rebekah, Jill, Collins, Charlotte and the rest of the staff enough I was worried about this transition and everyone has stepped up and made it delightful. All the residents are amazing and so friendly and helpful as well. Carp is so lucky to have a place like the Commons!!”

— Annie Craig, Google Review

Inviting and high-quality accommodations

“From day one my father-in-law has found a comfortable and welcoming home at Carp Commons. His accommodations are inviting and of high quality. He receives excellent personal and medical support and care. The programmes and facilities are top notch. Visitors are equally welcomed as members of the Carp Commons family. The staff members are all exceptionally friendly, and the general atmosphere is uplifting and peaceful. All of us, including our father the resident, could not be happier with our decision to make Carp Commons a part of our lives.”

Website

I can’t leave out Chartwell Retirement Residence—it’s a big player in the senior living scene. Since 2001, they’ve gone from a small Canadian company to one of the top providers in the country.

Located on Porter Island with beautiful views of the Rideau River, it’s the perfect mix of luxury and care.

And when I say luxury, I mean it. Chartwell lets you customize your care while enjoying gourmet meals and a tight-knit community. It’s like living in a retirement spa, but you’re calling the shots.

But of course, luxury doesn’t come cheap. Chartwell is definitely on the pricier side, and that could be a deal-breaker if budget’s a concern.

Pros

  • More than a decade of experience
  • Country’s top senior living provider
  • Offers a view of the Rideau River
  • Allows care customization

Cons

  • On the pricier side

Extremely well-managed care and excellent solutions from the team

“Our family is so appreciative of the care our late mother was given at the Chartwell Rockcliffe. She lived there for 5 years and her care was extremely well managed by the care team. In the last year her needs were great but the team always responded with excellent solutions. Our sincere thanks to: Revelina, Camille, Tess, Theresa, Ruby Ann, Jaylene, Marie Pierre and Elizabeth.”
