Amidst the pandemic, it emerged as a cherished refuge for friends seeking a safe haven to gather and socialize. With ample green space and a respectful adherence to the 2-meter distance rule, picnics on the lush lawn became a beloved pastime.

What makes Major’s Hill Park even more appealing is the fact that if you’re still hungry, you can actually get some good food and drinks not too far from your picnic spot. 

The nearby Tavern On the Hill, a highly popular seasonal outdoor patio, offers a delightful variety of menu items for you to sink your teeth into!

With its rich history, unbeatable location, and welcoming ambiance, Major’s Hill Park undoubtedly stands out as one of Ottawa’s best picnic spots. It’s a place where history, nature, and human connection come together almost seamlessly.

This makes it an absolute must-visit for those seeking a day filled with fun, relaxation, and the sweet pleasures of a picnic. It’s nestled gracefully on Fournier Boulevard in Gatineau and is a stunning testament to the beauty of the great outdoors. 

Surrounded by the tranquil waters of Leamy Lake, as well as the majestic Gatineau and Ottawa rivers, it is a picturesque sight to behold and a great photo opportunity. 

The sight of sparkling waters reflecting the blue skies and lush greenery will leave you awe-struck, setting the stage for a memorable picnic experience.

At Leamy Lake Park, you’ll find an impressive array of amenities, ensuring a delightful day trip for all picnickers.

The Dominion Arboretum is yet another hidden gem of natural splendor hidden within the heart of Ottawa. This enchanting 26-hectare arboretum is a treasure trove of botanical wonders, boasting a mesmerizing collection of trees from all around the globe. 

As soon as you step into this horticultural paradise, you’ll find yourself transported to a realm where the beauty of nature unfolds in every leaf, petal, and blossom.

During late spring, the Dominion Arboretum puts on a spectacular display of colors as vibrant blossoms adorn the landscape like an artist’s palette come to life. 

The air is infused with the sweet fragrance of blooming trees, and the sight of blossoms in hues of pink, white, and purple fills your heart with joy. This is a time when the arboretum truly comes alive, embracing all visitors in its embrace of natural beauty.

A picturesque wooden bridge spans a tranquil pond within the arboretum, adding to its charm and allure. As you wander across the bridge, you’ll likely encounter families of ducks, perhaps some geese, and even elegant herons gliding through the waters. 

The pond is a sanctuary of harmony, where the soothing sounds of gentle ripples mingle with the cheerful quacks of the ducks. This is one of my favorite parts about this particular picnic spot because it’s an idyllic setting for relaxation and contemplation.

For those seeking a touch of adventure, the pond also welcomes fishing enthusiasts to cast their lines and reel in a prized catch. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced angler or a novice because the joy of the fishing experience itself is more than enough.

But the true magic of the Dominion Arboretum lies in its invitation to indulge in the timeless tradition of picnicking. The vast expanse of greenery and the soothing ambiance creates an atmosphere of tranquility, where worries seem just to melt away. 

You can lay out your picnic blanket under the shade of a magnificent tree, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a moment of serenity, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

As you savor your delicious picnic fare, surrounded by the symphony of nature, you may feel a sense of connection with the world around you. And as the warm sun filters through the lush foliage, you might even find yourself taking a quick nap too. 

In the Dominion Arboretum, it always feels like time seems to slow down, and moments of peace and wonder become the currency of the day from my experience. 

Being able to go on a picnic here is nothing short of awesome, as it brings a sense of renewal and connection to nature that helps rejuvenate the soul.

Aside from settling down on a picnic mat and indulging in some scrumptious food and drinks, you can also enjoy some fun paddling activities! You can rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard and set sail on the glistening waters of Dow’s Lake. 

Nothing beats being able to glide along the tranquil surface and feeling the gentle rhythm of each stroke as you navigate the pristine waters. 

And because it’s situated near Little Italy, you and your companions can also go and indulge in this neighborhood’s culinary delights after your picnic. Or, you can also grab the food you’ll be eating during your picnic from there instead!

This charming neighborhood is renowned for its delectable eateries, offering a feast of flavors that tantalize the taste buds. This means you can grab some takeout from the delightful eateries of Little Italy, as each dish is crafted with passion and love. 

Pure Kitchen and EVOO Greek Kitchen are excellent choices, their offerings promising a burst of deliciousness that complements the picnic ambiance.

With your picnic basket filled with mouthwatering treats, find a cozy spot by the lakeshore. The gentle breeze carries the scent of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers, setting the stage for an enchanting picnic experience. 

As you settle down, the mesmerizing view of the water will unfold before you, creating a serene backdrop for your day out, along with another photo opportunity!

And if you visit during spring, you’re in for an extra treat because the world-famous Canadian Tulip Festival blankets the area in a kaleidoscope of colors. Tulips of every hue sway gently in the breeze, their vibrant petals brightening the landscape. 

The view becomes a tapestry of colors, an exquisite display of nature’s artistry, adding an extra layer of beauty to your already delightful picnic.
