The Ultimate Tourist’s Guide for Exploring Downtown Rideau

The Ultimate Tourist’s Guide for Exploring Downtown Rideau

Ottawa’s a pretty large place with so many great places to explore. You’ve got the Downtown Ottawa area with its urbanized feel, then you have Downtown Rideau.

Unlike its counterpart, you can say that Downtown Rideau places more emphasis on the arts and history of the city. There are plenty of exciting things to discover here, especially if you are a first-timer to Ottawa.

An Overview of Downtown Rideau

Downtown Rideau started its life as the original “downtown” of Ottawa. The area was first settled in 1826 when Lieutenant-Colonel John By began construction of the Rideau Canal

Rideau Street quickly became the main commercial district of the city, and it remained the heart of Ottawa until the late 19th century.

In the early years, Rideau Street was home to a variety of businesses, including stores, hotels, and taverns. The district was also a popular gathering place for residents, who would come to shop, socialize, and enjoy the city’s nightlife.

In the late 19th century, the construction of Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market led to a shift in the focus of the city.

These new areas became more attractive to businesses and residents, and Rideau Street gradually lost its status as the city’s downtown.

However, Rideau Street remains an important part of Ottawa’s history and culture. The area is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Bytown Museum and the Château Laurier Hotel.

Besides the iconic Rideau Canal, this part of Ottawa offers so many incredible things that you can discover.

Notable Locations in Downtown Rideau

Part of what makes exploring Downtown Rideau such an enjoyable experience is the many attractions you can find along the way. Make sure to stop by these landmarks and take plenty of pictures!

We really can’t talk about this part of Ottawa without mentioning the Rideau Canal. Besides being one of the signature attractions here, it has an extreme amount of significance to the capital, and for a very good reason.

This man-made body of water is a tour de force, having been considered an engineering and architectural feat by man when it was first created.

Today, it stands as one of the city’s most popular attractions, with its waters surrounding the iconic Parliament Hill.

Thanks to its beauty and historical significance, the Rideau Canal has been crowned a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a title it has more than earned. As a tourist, you definitely want to see this marvelous man-made structure with your own two eyes.

Its scenic beauty is truly a sight to behold, lined with lush greenery and flowers in the spring and summer.

Of course, it’s also known as the world’s largest skating rink in the winter. Here, it transforms into an icy wonderland that offers a stunning backdrop.

Aesthetics aside, this place is a hub of activity too. The summer season makes it an ideal location for locals and visitors alike to stroll, jog, or cycle along its banks.

Come winter, you can have a chance to go skating with locals and other tourists and even strike up conversations with them. I think this is a great opportunity to make some new friends.

You also don’t want to miss the chance to experience the canal during the Winterlude Festival, where it takes center stage. From ice sculptures to winter sports, it becomes even livelier as it comes alive with activity.

Boat tours along the canal are a popular choice, offering a different perspective of the city. The guides here are well-versed, sharing intriguing stories about the waterway’s history and its integral role in shaping Ottawa.

Now, when you are taking a cruise, be on the lookout for the charming locks along the canal, such as the Ottawa Locks and the Hartwells Lockstation.

It’s simply a fascinating experience to watch boats navigate these mechanisms and is an intriguing glimpse into the waterway’s engineering marvels.

You may know Parliament Hill as the heart of Canada’s democracy, symbolizing our nation’s rich history and political significance. The architecture is nothing short of majestic, with the Gothic Revival style adding a touch of grandeur that you can’t miss.

During the summer, catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a colorful display of military precision that adds a cultural flair to the experience.

And when the sun sets, don’t miss the “Northern Lights” sound and light show, which allows you to see a different side of the government building’s beauty.

Parliament Hill’s “Northern Lights” show

Speaking of views, the panorama from Parliament Hill is simply breathtaking.

You get a sweeping look at the Ottawa River, Gatineau Hills, and the cityscape. This makes it a perfect venue for snapping some Insta-worthy shots or simply taking in the scenery.

Now, the proximity to the Rideau Canal adds another layer to the experience. You can seamlessly transition between the two attractions to see different sides of the city.

The Famous Five Statue

The Famous Five Statue

Address: 2 Rideau St, Ottawa, ON K1N 8X5, Canada

Operating hours:

  • 24/7

The Famous Five Monument, also recognized as the Persons Case Monument or the Women Are Persons! Monument, stands as an illustrious bronze tribute in Ottawa, Canada.

This remarkable sculpture commemorates the historic “Persons Case” of 1929, a pivotal legal triumph that affirmed women as “persons” under the British North America Act.

Because of this, it constituted a profound advancement in the recognition of women’s rights within the Canadian constitutional framework.

The five distinguished women immortalized by this monument are exemplary figures who played instrumental roles in the battle for gender equality:

  • Irene Parlby (1878-1960): A luminary in the fields of law, politics, and activism.
  • Louise McKinney (1868-1931): A trailblazer as a teacher, writer, and ardent activist.
  • Nellie McClung (1873-1953): A formidable force as a writer, educator, and committed activist.
  • Emily Murphy (1868-1933): A pioneering judge and jurist who left an indelible mark on Canadian legal history.
  • Henrietta Muir Edwards (1874-1954): A distinguished doctor and fervent suffragist.

The talented artist Barbara Paterson was the one responsible for creating this masterpiece and it was unveiled in the year 2000.

Its prominent location on Wellington Street West, adjacent to the Senate of Canada Building, strategically situates it amidst the political heart of the nation.

The Famous Five Statues in Ottawa but from a different angle

The sculpture itself is a poignant representation, portraying the quintet gathered for a tea party, a symbolic celebration of their hard-fought victory in the Persons Case.

This bronze masterpiece not only serves as a captivating tourist attraction but also functions as a poignant reminder of the indispensable contributions of women to Canadian history.

The Famous Five Monument stands as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of these remarkable individuals who catalyzed legal and societal change, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to come.

In its evocative portrayal, it encapsulates the spirit of progress and the indomitable strength of those who championed the cause of women’s rights in Canada.

Pro Tip:

One of the best times to visit the monument is during sunset. The warm glow of the setting sun against the bronze statues is nothing short of magical.

Plus, the whole area takes on this serene vibe, making it the perfect spot for reflection!

You really don’t want to miss an opportunity to drop by the Rideau Hall. Besides being the governor general’s residence, it’s also got gorgeous scenery that will have you snapping a few pictures to take home as a souvenir.

The architecture alone is worth the visit. The sprawling grounds and the official residence itself are like a snapshot of Canadian heritage.

The ballroom, the staterooms—they’ve all seen dignitaries, royalty, and probably a few moose-themed soirées.

Now here’s what many of us consider to be the main star of the show: the gardens. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill flower beds, as expert landscapers have been hired to truly create a breathtaking yard.

The Rideau Hall gardens are a masterpiece. When you stroll through them, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a botanical wonderland.

The best part is that it’s free to wander around the grounds. You can saunter through these regal gardens without spending a dime, and it’s like getting a VIP tour of Canadian history without opening your wallet.

It doesn’t end there, though, as the hall often hosts public events, such as the annual Winter Celebration and Canada Day. You can join plenty of other Ottawans and tourists here instead if you want to be somewhere else other than Parliament Hill.

I and plenty of other Ottawans describe the Confederation Park as an urban oasis. It’s nestled right by City Hall and a stone’s throw from Parliament Hill, offering you a perfect blend of tranquility and vibrancy.

When it comes to events, Confederation Park is one of the city’s go-to spots for festivals and gatherings. We hold all sorts of occasions here, such as live music concerts, company outings, cultural celebrations, and more.

This place is buzzing with activity a lot of the time. The energy during these events is contagious, and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of the action.

Confederation Park’s monument

If you’re a history buff, the location has a fair share of monuments and plaques that tell tales of Canada’s past. You can take a leisurely stroll and soak in the stories etched into the very fabric of the green space.

And the best part? Confederation Park is a fantastic starting point for exploring the rest of Downtown Rideau.

It’s like the green gateway to all the cultural, historical, and entertainment wonders this area has to offer.

The Connaught Building is a historic office establishment and a designated Classified Federal Heritage Building. Today, it stands as one of the most recognizable structures in the city.

We Ottawans know this place for its gorgeous Tudor-style Gothic design, showcasing the capital city’s architectural legacy.

Now, here’s the kicker—it’s not just about the exterior. Once you venture inside Connaught, you’ll be greeted by a lobby that’s straight out of a vintage movie.

The marble, the woodwork, the attention to detail—it’s a nod to a bygone era of elegance. It’s the kind of place where you half-expect to bump into folks from the roaring twenties.

Besides the gorgeous architecture, the building also has some political chops as well. It’s been home to various government offices over the years, bearing witness to plenty of important decisions that shaped Ottawa and Canada into what it is today.

Connaught Building’s streets

Of course, one of the best things about this establishment is its location. The Connaught Building sits proudly on Wellington Street, right in the heart of the action.

You can easily make it part of your Downtown Rideau adventure, sandwiched between iconic spots like Parliament Hill and the National Arts Centre.

Pro Tip:

During the first week of June an event called ‘Doors Open Ottawa’ takes place. This gives you access to many of the city’s unique and historically significant buildings, including the Connaught Building.

In this period, you can get a backstage pass to explore the historical nooks and crannies of this iconic landmark.

In 1826, Colonel John By, the engineer who oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal, chose Major’s Hill as the site for his headquarters.

The location was named after Major H.C. “Long” Major, a British officer who had been stationed in the area during the War of 1812.

By’s house, which is still located in the park today, served as the center of operations for the canal project. The colonel’s home was also used as a social gathering place for By and his officers.

Major’s Hill Park with people

Today, Major’s Hill Park is a cherished part of Ottawa’s downtown core. The green space is a popular spot for walking, jogging, cycling, and picnicking.

It is also home to a number of historical landmarks and a former greenhouse that now serves as a restaurant.

The views are off the charts too! From this vantage point, you can see Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River, and the Château Laurier.

But it’s not just about the scenery. Major’s Hill Park is one of our go-to spots for events and festivals.

During Winterlude, it transforms into an icy landscape with ice sculptures and outdoor activities. In the summer, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic or a lazy afternoon reading a book.

One of the things that I love the most about the ByWard Market is its energy. It’s simply contagious, and it makes the shopping experience incredible.

Tourists go nuts for them, and locals secretly indulge in them more often than they’d like to admit. It’s a guilty pleasure, and you can’t visit the ByWard Market without trying one.

Then there’s Le Moulin de Provence, the bakery that proudly displays the Obama Cookie. Yep, you heard it right – even former President Obama couldn’t resist the allure of their pastries.

For those into unique finds, the market is a treasure trove. There’s Maker House Co., showcasing handmade Canadian goods that make perfect souvenirs or gifts.

And for the artsy crowd, the Cube Gallery is a must-visit, featuring local artists and their captivating works.

Now, let’s not forget about the fresh stuff. The produce stands are a game-changer.

From vibrant fruits and veggies to artisanal cheeses and maple syrup, it’s like a feast for the senses. You can literally taste the local goodness.

But what really seals the deal for me is the history. The ByWard Market has been around since 1826, and it’s woven into the fabric of Ottawa.

Walking those cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time while indulging in the best that modern Ottawa has to offer.

Pro Tip:

If you’re planning to visit the ByWard Market, come on a Saturday. That’s when the outdoor market kicks into high gear.
