The Tastiest Mexican Restaurants in Ottawa Serving up the Ultimate Burritos, Quesadillas, Nachos, and More!

Okay, let me be honest with you. Writing this article is no walk in the park, although that’s exactly what I should do to help digest my stomach full of burritos.

Want to know why? Ottawa is teeming with too many mouth-watering Mexican restaurants!

Usually, this would be my ideal scenario, but if I tried to include them all, this article would practically become a novel.

To make matters worse, my editor only allowed me a few spots. It’s like fitting two weeks’ worth of clothes into my carry-on luggage – a lot of compromise, but not impossible. So, to the drawing board, I went!

After months of “research” (aka devouring everything in sight) and a little help from my fellow writers at Best in Ottawa, I’ve curated the ultimate list of Ottawa’s creme de la creme of Mexican joints. Phew!

These places are so good, you might even consider getting a tattoo of your favorite dish!

1. El Camino

Website: https://eatelcamino.com
Address: 380 Elgin St

Operating hours:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday to Thursday, and Sunday – 5:30 PM to 11 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 5:30 PM to 12 AM

El Camino’s exciting menu is filled with modern Mexican plates that will spark a newfound love for the traditional flavors. However, you can be assured that you’ll taste the classic robust notes we all know and love.

At this vibrant yet wholly intimate enclave, the tacos take center stage. Patrons can choose from a variety of offerings, including crispy fish taco, beef barbacoa taco, chorizo crispy taco, and so much more.

This isn’t to say that they don’t have anything besides tacos though! They also have other thrilling options like lamb quesabirria (phenomenal!), salt and pepper squid, and even churros for an indulgent way to end a meal.

To pair with your orders, they also have cocktails and beer!

2. Ahora Mexican Cuisine

Situated in ByWard Market, Ahora Mexican Cuisine echoes the neighborhood’s vibrant feel with its festive interior and spirited ambiance.

Together with its authentic menu offerings, a visit will transport patrons to the lively fiestas where vibrant music and rich aromas coincide.

For the ultimate meal worth celebrating, consider trying out their burritos that come in 9 different flavors.

The burrito gourmet is undoubtedly a favorite of mine, which I highly recommend to those who want jam-packed fillings, featuring chicken or steak, cheese, black beans, rice, salsa, gringa, lettuce, and more.

3. Feleena’s

Website: https://feleenas.ca
Address: 742 Bank St
Contact details: +1 613-233-2010
Operating hours:

  • Monday to Saturday – 11:30 AM to 9 PM
  • Sunday – 11:30 AM to 8 PM

Feleena’s is a hip joint that reminds me so much of the spirited vibe of Mexico with its colorful furnishings and ornate touches that evoke a sense of celebration rooted in tradition.

However, its exuberant vibe isn’t the only thing that appeals to hungry foodies in and out of Ottawa, but it sure does help!

The enchiladas are extraordinary, garnering rave reviews from anyone who has ever tried it. I personally like it too, but I find myself leaning towards the tequila shrimp chile relleno even more, especially if I’m in the mood for a spicy kick!

I recommend the margaritas too, another crowd favorite that is a guaranteed Feleena’s must-try.

4. La Fiesta Latina

  • Sunday – 10 AM to 8 PM

La Fiesta Latina is a charming and homey eatery, focusing on authentic Mexican cuisine. It serves as a great hangout spot for those seeking a cozy atmosphere to be enjoyed with the comforting fare.

And speaking of comforting, the yuca fries know how to hit the spot! This star attraction is well-loved for its crispy on the outside, soft on the inside texture, and heartwarming earthy flavor that makes every bite satisfying.

I also suggest ordering the tres types of tacos to get a taste of their different offerings. But the twist is, you get to pick the flavors!

5. La Bonita Restaurant

Operating hours:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday to Thursday, and Sunday – 5 PM to 9 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 5 PM to 10 PM

Situated in the energetic street of Wellington, La Bonita Restaurant is a quirky joint that knows how to make a customer’s dining experience memorable by serving impeccable Mexican dishes.

The quesadilla stands out as a must-try, which you can tailor-make according to your liking.

Choose from one of their delicious fillings— I recommend the chorizo— and you’re bound to have a delightful culinary experience, one that will make you want to come back for more!

And if you still have room for dessert, which I hope you do, don’t forget to get yourself some choco-flan, an indulgent treat that combines the best of flans and chocolate cakes!

6. Pancho Villa

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday and Wednesday – 5 PM to 10 PM
  • Thursday to Sunday – 11:30 AM to 10 PM

Elgin Street is where locals and visitors alike flock to try delicious culinary gems.

And of course, Pancho Villa is one of them, especially when we’re talking about sipping snazzy margaritas by the patio!

Surprisingly, they’re also popular for their dessert options with the deep-fried ice cream being the chart-topper! It’s a unique way to end your meal, for sure.

Oh, wait – why am I starting with dessert? I guess I got a bit too excited!

Anyway, consider also ordering their finest plates – grilled garlic shrimp, fajitas, and chimichanga!

If you’re looking for something even more exciting, try the Mexican pizza for a unique take on tacos. Instead of corn or flour tortillas, this unique concoction is served on a 10-inch pita bread!

7. El Taco De Oro

Address: 303 St. Patrick St
Contact details: +1 613-241-4444
Operating hours:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday and Wednesday – 4 PM to 9 PM
  • Thursday and Sunday – 11 AM to 9 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 11 AM to 10 PM

El Taco De Oro is a quaint Lowertown gem that surprisingly continues to fly under the radar despite its tasty bites and hip interior.

As you would expect, the tacos are the main reason why it made it to this list. While the flavor options aren’t as diverse as the other spots in the city, the quality shines through in every bite.

The shrimp tacos offer a surprising culinary experience because aside from the ingredients you’d expect – veggies, shrimp, and mayo sauce perhaps – there’s also a drizzle of chocolate sauce.

And you know what? It surprisingly works! Now, here I am, constantly craving chocolate whenever I get my hands on shrimp tacos from another joint, as if something’s missing from the experience.

8. Corazon De Maiz

Contact details: +1 613-244-1661

  • Sunday – 11 AM to 6 PM

Corazon De Maiz is a festive gem in the ByWard Market, elevating the zesty vibe in a bustling hub filled with irresistible eats.

The pork burrito is a standout hit, making it to my personal list of favorite burritos in the city. The portions are extremely generous, ensuring patrons feel satisfied down to the last bite.

It also won’t hurt to order the quesadilla, another favorite that continues to garner positive reviews from foodies, thanks to its triple-cheese extravaganza.

9. John Juan Burrito Mexican Grill

Website: https://johnjuan.ca
Address: 1091 St. Laurent Blvd
Contact details: +1 613-745-9696
Operating hours: Monday to Sunday – 10 AM to 1:30 AM

This next one on the list is especially for your late-night craving for a mouth-watering indulgence. And the next best thing about it? It’s totally affordable.

I guess it wouldn’t be surprising if I told you that John Juan Burrito Mexican Grill is a popular spot!

The burrito bowl is the ultimate hot ticket for its satisfying portions, fresh ingredients, and delicious taste. Actually, one might even say it’s good for two people, but feel free to savor every bite in one meal – I won’t judge.

Heck, I might even pull out a chair and join you!

10. Si Señor Mexican Street Food

Contact details: +1 613-421-7490
Operating hours:

  • Monday – closed
  • Tuesday to Saturday – 12 PM to 9 PM
  • Sunday – 12 PM to 5 PM

Si Señor is an exciting gastronomic retreat, offering an impeccable variety of Mexican favorites.

They have the classics such as burrito bowls, quesadillas, and such with some flavorful specialties like loaded fries and loaded nachos

However, if you want to indulge in the chart-topper, do consider getting yourself some quesabirrias. This exciting menu favorite comes in three pieces, and you can choose between lamb or beef.

The consomé elevates the juiciness and bursts of flavor, and I simply can’t get enough of it. And you know what? I’m sure you’ll feel the same way!

11. Mona’s Taqueria

  • Tuesday to Thursday – 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 11:30 AM to 2 AM

Mona’s Taqueria might as well be one of Ottawa’s best-kept secrets. This underrated joint with an unassuming facade will wow you with its delectable offerings.

And did I mention they’re pretty affordable too?

The tacos de pastor is the top contender with its mouth-watering blend of juicy marinated pork, zesty salsa, and fresh ingredients, creating an exciting dish with punchy flavors.

I also love the alambre norteño, which is my go-to when I’m craving something extremely filling. It’s packed with mushrooms, vegan cheese, peppers, onions, and corn tortillas.

12. Mucho Burrito

Website: https://muchoburrito.com
Address: 515 Industrial Ave
Contact details: +1 613-860-2444
Operating hours:

  • Monday to Saturday – 10:30 AM to 10 PM
  • Sunday – 10:30 AM to 9 PM

Mucho Burrito is a popular joint with multiple locations across the country.

It’s a great option for those on-the-go, looking for something quick and easy to eat, yet still tasty, satisfying, and fresh.

While the taste isn’t really authentic, you get great value for your buck for Mexican-inspired dishes that are crafted with modern twists on traditional dishes.

Their tacos are incredibly delicious, and it helps that you can create your own from their choices of proteins, fillings, topics, cheeses, garnishes, and sauces.

I find that choosing your own adventure when it comes to flavors is half the fun!
