The 12 Best Croissant Shops in Ottawa That’ll Make You Eat More than You Can Usually Take

One workday morning, I decided to go to a pastry store to grab something to eat before a meeting.

I smelled the buttery aroma as soon as I entered the door and walked out with a bag containing three different flavours of croissant. I ate two before I even reached my car.

That’s the thing about Canada’s capital city: it has seriously delicious croissants (the kind that actually taste as if they came from a bakery in Paris).

If you love this crescent-shaped treat just like me, you shouldn’t miss my list of the best croissant shops in Ottawa.

1. Amandine Pâtisserie

Address: 1175 Wellington St. W

Business Hours: Monday to Sunday – 8 AM to 6 PM

Must-order: Almond Croissant

Amandine Pâtisserie is an authentic French pastry shop located on Wellington Street in Hintonburgh. The main draw is the open kitchen, where guests can watch desserts being made.

Behind the kitchen glass, they make croissants, cannelés, and other French pastries using traditional techniques and scratch-made products.

The staff recommended their Almond Croissant, and it turned out to be a standout. Every bite delivers almond richness through a brittle exterior that gives way to tasty custard cream inside.

Pro Tip:

Try their Butter and Chocolate Croissants if you want to feast on something with a sweeter filling.

2. Art Is In Bakery

Address: 250 City Centre Ave #112

Contact Details:

Business Hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday – 8 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Thursday and Friday – 8:30 AM to 9 PM
  • Saturday – 9 AM to 9 PM
  • Sunday – 9 AM to 2:30 PM

Must-order: Chocolate Almond Croissant

Art Is In Bakery was born from a love story—and a love of pastry. Husband-and-wife duo Kevin and Stephanie Mathieson founded the bakery together, with Kevin bringing his classical French training to the kitchen where he works his magic as head chef.

His French dessert expertise shines through in every aspect of their business’s concept, drawing inspiration from Parisian boulangeries and Brooklyn cafes.

They gained fame for their “O-Towner” cronut—a cross between a croissant and a donut—which helped earn them features on Food Network shows including “You Gotta Eat Here!” and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”

But don’t overlook their pure croissant offerings either. The Chocolate Almond Croissant I tried proved to be their signature pastry. The flaky layers hold up against the filling without becoming too heavy.

Pro Tip:

The bakery only accepts debit and credit card payments.

3. Adam Bakes

Website: https://adambakes.com/

Address: 538 Rochester St

Business Hours: Saturday – 8 AM to 12 PM

Must-order: Ham & Swiss Croissant

Adam Cenaiko is a former executive pastry chef whose career included positions at the Fairmont Château Laurier, the Rideau Club, and various bakeries. Drawing on this experience, he now runs his own venture, Adam Bakes.

Despite opening only on Saturdays, his croissant has amassed a devoted following. I even cleared my schedule one weekend to try one of their pastries.

I ordered the Ham & Swiss Croissant, which melted in my mouth with surprising lightness and softness. The standard butter croissant dough appears to be swirled with ham and Swiss cheese inside.

Pro Tip:

Since the bakery only opens once a week, pre-ordering is a good idea to ensure you get what you want.

4. Bread By Us

Business Hours:

  • Tuesday to Friday – 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Saturday – 9 AM to 4 PM

Must-order: Butter Croissant

After honing her skills at Vancouver’s Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, Jessica Carpinone brought Bread By Us to life.

The shop focuses on traditional sourdough techniques and uses high-quality untreated flours, extending their commitment to quality into their products.

They’ve also carved out a reputation for perfecting the Butter Croissant, with a fresh and flaky outer and creamy layers. They’re definitely the ideal spot to visit when craving a classic flavour.

Pro Tip:

Their butter croissant pairs well with their locally sourced jams, which are available for purchase.

5. Mamie Clafoutis Ottawa

Address: 400 Richmond Rd

Contact Details:

Business Hours: Monday to Sunday – 8 AM to 6 PM

Must-order: Frozen Chocolatines

Mamie Clafoutis Ottawa is the ninth branch of the shop, marking the first franchise outside Quebec. The name is meant to represent family cooking traditions.

This homey notion extends to the physical store itself. The bright room with numerous bay windows forms a friendly and pleasant space.

They bring Montreal-style French baking to the city, showcasing a blend of Canadian and French techniques in their pastry-making.

I swing by to buy their people’s favourite Frozen Chocolatines (Chocolate Croissants) so that I have a tasty dessert to prepare at home whenever I want.

Pro Tip:

Mini versions of their croissants are available for those who want to sample multiple pastries.

6. Les Moulins La Fayette

Address: 1000 Wellington St. W #103

Contact Details:

Business Hours:

  • Tuesday to Thursday – 8 AM to 3 PM
  • Friday and Saturday – 8 AM to 4 PM
  • Sunday – 8 AM to 3 PM

Must-order: Cheese Croissant

Les Moulins La Fayette is managed by a fifth-generation baker and chocolatier whose heritage dates back to 1978 in France. Since its inception, the Ottawa store has been home to all five generations of French baking techniques.

Today, this family tradition unfolds in a cozy area on the main floor of a condo building in Hintonburg. Although it offers enough seating, the store still fills up fast, especially once the trays of Cheese Croissants hit the counter.

These are perfect for those who don’t have the biggest sweet tooth and who prefer something savoury.

Pro Tip:

Avoid visiting from 1 PM until closing if you don’t want a large crowd.

7. The French Baker

Website: https://www.frenchbaker.ca/

Address: 119 Murray St

Contact Details:

Business Hours: Monday to Sunday – 7 AM to 5 PM

Must-order: Almond Croissant

The French Baker is a Byward Market gem. Known as a traditional French pastry shop, it has preserved levian baking techniques — they still make bread on stone hearths!

The owner suggested the Almond Croissant as a must-try, explaining they use first-quality butter and carefully honed handmade production techniques for this sweet tooth favourite.

While you might be there for the bread, don’t overlook the restaurant tucked away at the back. It’s the perfect spot for a meal before indulging in something sweet from the bakery counter.

Pro Tip:

Their Chausson aux Pommes (Apple Turnover) offers a fruity contrast to the buttery richness of croissants.

8. Wild Oat

Website: https://wildoat.ca/

Address: 817 Bank St

Contact Details:

Business Hours: Monday to Sunday – 7 AM to 6 PM

Must-order: Rosemary Goat Cheese Croissant

Wild Oat has been serving pastries since the 1990s, having operated as Croissant Express before the name change.

With decades of experience under their belt, they’re confident in what they do. So much so that the kitchen is wide open, allowing you to see every croissant being hand-rolled.

What goes into those handmade sweets is equally impressive. They use organic flour and source ingredients from their own farm located near Ottawa.

With such quality ingredients, I was eager to see how they translated into the final product. I tried their Rosemary Goat Cheese Croissant — the goat cheese’s earthy flavour isn’t overwhelming.

Pro Tip:

Check their rotating specials. There’s always something new to discover.

9. The Black Walnut Bakery

Media credit: @theblackwalnutbakery

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theblackwalnutbakery/

Website: https://blackwalnutbakery.ca/

Address: 979 Cameron St, Cumberland

Contact Details:

Business Hours: Wednesday to Saturday – 8 AM to 5 PM

Must-order: Chocolate Almond Croissant

Instead of a typical storefront, Black Walnut Bakery lives in a cheerful yellow house that feels like you’ve just stepped into someone’s kitchen.

The space has a warmth that immediately puts guests at ease, but it’s the pastries that ultimately convince you to stay a little longer.

Here, everything is made from scratch, including their Chocolate Almond Croissant. Biting into it produces a satisfying crack—the outer layer delivers that perfectly crunchy and flaky crumble.

Pro Tip:

The bakery gets busy, especially on weekends with bike clubs, so try to arrive early.

10. Keepin’ it Vegan

Website: https://www.kvbakery.ca/

Address: 3 Chartwell Ave

Contact Details:

Business Hours:

  • Tuesday to Saturday – 8:30 AM to 5 PM
  • Sunday – 9 AM to 4:30 PM

Must-order: Vegan Almond Croissant

Keepin’ it Vegan specializes in vegan versions of French pastries. Aside from croissants, they also offer a great variety of breads and cakes.

I admire them for successfully replicating the butter-forward nature of French croissants using plant-based ingredients.

Out of all the flavours, the Almond Croissant comes highly recommended. Sweet nut fillings get topped with powdered sugar, but a touch of salt cuts through to keep it from becoming overwhelming.

Pro Tip:

They also bake custom cakes that are perfect for birthday celebrations.

11. Purebread

Address: #108, 2575 Blackwell St

Must-order: Ham & Cheese Croissant

Andy trained under the founder of the UK’s Real Bread Campaign, spending years on traditional, no-shortcut baking before he established Purebread.

He and his team have taken pride in supplying bread to Ottawa’s farmers’ markets since 2013. In fact, you won’t find their pastries in a sit-down cafe—they’re only available through food merchants.

At one of these markets, I tried the Ham & Cheese Croissant on a whim. The saltiness of the ham and cheese plays beautifully against the dough’s subtle sweetness, creating a perfect balance.

Pro Tip:

Check their Instagram for weekly market schedules and current offerings.

12. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana

Media credit: @pasgelitaliana

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pasgelitaliana/

Website: https://italianpastryshop.ca/

Address: 200 Preston St

Contact Details:

Business Hours: Wednesday to Sunday – 9 AM to 9 PM

Must-order: Frangipane Pistachio Croissant

Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana is a family-run pastry shop in the heart of Little Italy on Preston Street. Everything they serve is made in-house using Italian craftsmanship and the finest ingredients.

They were the first shop in Ottawa to serve gelato. Whether you prefer classic flavours or want to try something adventurous, their gelatos showcase the same Italian craftsmanship as their pastries.

When it comes to their croissants, the Frangipane Pistachio Croissant is on another level. The pistachio flavour comes through prominently without overpowering the sweetness of the frangipani filling and the other ingredients.

Pro Tip:

Always contact them first before visiting—their business hours can change without prior notice.
