Thomas Tree Farm, now that’s where you want to be for the real deal when it comes to Christmas tree hunting in the city.

It’s tucked away on a sprawling 50-acre property just a few minutes from the capital and is a festive paradise where the holiday spirit comes alive.

First off, let’s talk about the ambiance. Thomas Tree Farm features a picturesque maple bush, and it simply makes for an awesome backdrop while you search for that perfect piece for your Christmas decor.

The place doesn’t just hand you a saw and point you towards the field, oh no. It’s got a tractor-drawn hay wagon ready to take you on a festive journey to find your ideal tree.

From my own experience, it feels like a Christmas adventure for the whole family.

And after your expedition, the place ensures that you are treated right. It has several cozy fire pits where you can relax when you’re done cutting down your personal Christmas Tree.

While you’re soaking in the warmth, the staff serves you complimentary hot chocolate and homemade cookies.

Now, let’s talk trees. The farm has a stellar selection of Balsam Fir, Spruce, and Scotch Pine, ranging from 6 to 10 feet, all ready for you to cut in the field.

If you’re not up for the lumberjack experience, the place’s got pre-cut beauties of the aforementioned species, spanning from 6 to 14 feet.

Truly, there’s something for every taste and space.

And if you’re going for a smaller tree, the farm has a selection of pre-cut balsam and spruce trees between 3 and 6 feet.

It even has limited trees under 6 feet in the field for you to cut yourself. It’s like a Christmas tree buffet.

Don’t forget the extras such as tractor-drawn wagon rides, hot chocolate, homemade cookies, boughs for decorating, and a play area for the kiddos.

And for those who want to add an extra touch to their holiday decor, the farm also has beautiful hand-made evergreen wreaths.

Pro Tip:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder at Thomas Tree Farm, so don’t bother asking any of the staff to pick a tree for you.

And bring a hand saw, no axes or chainsaws allowed. It’s a farm, after all.

Oh, and dress warmly, because winter on farmland is the real deal – colder, wetter, windier, and muddier than the city slickers might be used to.

Hillcrest Farm

Address: 7357 Fourth Line Rd, North Gower, ON K0A 2T0, Canada

Contact details: 613-489-2994

Operating hours:

  • Wednesday-Friday: 12:00 PM-4:00 PM

Hillcrest Tree Farm presents you with more than just a spot to snag a Christmas tree. It allows you to take home a piece of local history with a touch of holiday magic.

The building is situated on a 100-acre former dairy farm that dates all the way to the 1800s and simply oozes charm. Back in ’87, when the current owners got their hands on it, the buildings in the area were a bit of a fixer-upper, to put it lightly.

But they had a vision. A vision that transformed a dilapidated white clapboard farmhouse, a gambrel roof dairy barn, and a whole bunch of other farm-y structures into what it is today.

And let me tell you, it’s a picturesque beauty perched on the crest of a hill – hence the name Hillcrest. They went further beyond a restoration, you can say that resurrection might be a more fitting term.

Originally, the owners had dreams of a bed and breakfast, but fate had other plans. Fast forward to now, and Hillcrest Tree Farm has become a local favorite.

Now, the tree-picking experience is something else. You’ve got the full shebang – Balsam Fir, White Spruce, Norway Spruce, and Scotch Pine trees, all planted and pruned by hand and without that mass-produced nonsense.

The farm also features an indoor forest for pre-cut Balsam Firs, and let me tell you, it’s a place you want to get lost in.

And don’t even get me started on the wreaths. Fraser Fir or mixed-greens, plain or decorated – take your pick.

Hand-tied bows, a touch of festive flair, and voila, you’ve got yourself a door dressed to the nines. These wreaths go beyond being decorations; they’re works of art.

These make them perfect for gifting. And the cherry on top is that it even has gift boxes for that extra touch of class.
