5 Fun Activities in Ottawa for Adults That Are Just Too Good to Gatekeep

Meeting up with friends as an adult can feel like a rare event. Between hectic work schedules, family obligations, and the everyday hustle, coordinating time together can be a real challenge.

So when my friends and I manage to carve out time in our busy schedules, the occasion always calls for something exciting and unforgettable.

From catching up over boozy drinks to going on adrenaline-fueled outdoor adventures, we like doing fun activities we can bond over. I made a list of things we like to do below so you, too, can have a blast on your next get-together.

Whitewater rafting is an experience everyone should try at least once in their life. With OWL Rafting, you’ll follow the historic route forged by the First Nations on the Ottawa River, zooming past dense forests and rugged rock formations along the way.

You have a small window in the summer to experience this incredible opportunity. Whether with a group of friends, family, or like-minded strangers, it will be an experience you’ll never forget.

If it sounds interesting, check out a more comprehensive guide to OWL Rafting that can help you plan for this fun summer activity.

Pro Tip:

The best time to go OWL rafting on the Ottawa River is between May and June. It’s cheaper and less crowded during the early season, even on the weekends.

The Lookout has been around since 1996, but it’s still one of the best gay clubs in Ottawa. If you’re planning a night full of fun, laughter, and dancing, this place will not disappoint.

Except for Mondays, they have events scheduled throughout the week, such as themed performances, cocktail parties, and more.

If you want to watch the queens give an electrifying performance, swing by on a Friday or Saturday night. Every Sunday, they have karaoke sessions from 8 PM to 11 PM, the perfect time to belt out your favorite songs and showcase your singing chops.

Just check their website for upcoming events and other fun celebrations at the club.

Pro Tip:

In the summer, you can grab a table on their balcony to enjoy the cool breeze while sipping on your boozy drink of choice.

Everyone’s idea of fun is different—and if yours is a challenging round of golf, then I’ve got the spot in mind for you. Located about 20 minutes from Downtown Ottawa, you’ll find The Marshes Golf Club in Kanata.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., its 18-hole championship course is set against the backdrop of natural wetlands and hardwood forests. It’s also well-kept and perfectly manicured, easily making it one of the best public golf courses in the city.

My favorite part about golfing here is its convenient location in Brookstreet Hotel. After your tee time, you can sip cocktails by the pool or indulge in a leisurely meal at their restaurant.

Pro Tip:

All prices include a golf cart and access to the Practice Facility.

4. Listen to a jazz performance at Montgomery Scotch

If you’re looking for a nice place to catch up with friends, share a drink or two, and perhaps listen to live music, go visit Montgomery Scotch Lounge.

Ottawa has an incredible variety of jazz clubs, catering to every mood and occasion, and this place is one of them. It offers a front-row seat to the best jazz performances in the city, and its intimate setting makes every show feel like a VIP experience.

And of course, their liquor menu is a dream for a night out with friends—think martinis, cocktails, bubbly, and 77 single malt scotches. They have a little bit of something for everyone.

Pro tip:

Go to their website to find out the scheduled jazz performances for the month. You’ll see more details about the artists, set times, and ticket prices.

5. Get drinks at Jackalope

Location: 212 Sparks Street

Phone: +1 613 695 0500

Operating hours: Tue-Sat 5 PM to late hours

Did you know that Ottawa is home to several hidden bars? If you’re looking to experience something new and out of the ordinary, you should get drinks at Jackalope, one of the best speakeasies in the city.

This fantasy-themed bar is tucked away in the basement of the Rabbit Hole. It’s a fun, eccentric world if you want a little escape from the monotony of daily life and booze that looks like magical potions.

Most people come here for the drinks and the fantasy, but you can also get small plates of pizza and fresh oysters to complement the booze. If you’re looking for a hefty meal, it might be best to dine above ground at the Rabbit Hole prior to coming here.

Pro Tip:

The only way to enter is to make a reservation with Rabbit Hole. Once you’ve booked a table, their staff will show you a secret elevator that will take you to the speakeasy.
